Technolust DK2 Beta Demo Preview

Posted July 24, 2014 by David in Features

Technolust is a Cyberpunk adventure game made exclusively for the Oculus Rift and developers IRIS V.R have kindly given us preview access to the Beta demo which is due out with the release of the DK2 in the coming weeks.

Technolust City Streets

Technolust City Streets

Although this Beta build of Technolust is DK2 ready we had to play through using our DK1 as we stare endlessly at the door waiting for the postman to arrive but that my no means diminishes the impact of the experience.

People familiar with the Technolust will recognize the first section as it’s comprised of the original apartment and hallway. Some small details have been changed like the media on the billboards and some items in the room. The major change in this section of Technolust is how optimized this build is. When playing the original Technolust demo which was released some months back we did notice some low frame rates every so often but this new build is super-fast and should run at 75 frames per second on most half decent hardware. If you do notice any slow down at all in this video preview it’s due to my video capture software which is running as I play through the stages.

Once you leave your apartment you are on street level and the scale of the environment is really something to behold in VR. Technolust is one of the most beautifully realized environments we have seen to date and it has a lot to do with all the little details working together to trick your mind into believing you’re in the real world. Details like steam coming from vents, realistic lighting effects, advertising banners and news media streaming on street displays. I have stated before that all these environment elements working together really gives this section a Blade Runner esque type of feel and one which we love dearly. Again this section was available in the previous demo but the next area is certainly new and one which got me particularly excited.

Technolust Arcade

Technolust Arcade

Technolust’s arcade is definitely inspired by Flynn’s Arcade from the Tron movie. Walking around the units I see my miss spent youth spending countless hours playing games like Double Dragon , Rampage and Mortal Combat.  The Arcade really feels believable and looks beautiful in the Rift even on our Dev Kit 1. There are many Easter eggs in this area but our favourite is the 3D scan of the lead developer Blair inside a cabinet unit similar to the Zoltar Speaks unit from the Tom Hanks movie BIG.

One of the unique selling points of the Technolust Kick-starter was the ability to back the game and get some promotional material and assets put into Technolust. The Radial-G cross promotion material is really well put together and in no way feels like it’s a promotion as fits perfectly well into the world of Technolust. To progress to the next area you need to beat the best time on the score board via a hack which you’re going to have to figure out yourselves. On a side note I urge you all back Radial-G on kickstarter after watching this preview, it’s a fantastic sci-fi racer in the same vain as F-Zero and the Wipeout series of games. I will put a link in the description below.

Once you have completed your task you are granted access to the Subway system. The subway is for the moment a small area which leads to your next apartment but again the quality of the environmental design is top notch and this vision of a future transport system is totally plausible.

Once you navigate the Subway you will find your new apartment which feels similar to your previous apartment but has some interesting features that you can interact with. One of which are some old school 3D glasses you can put them on and a 3D anaglyph movie will play. Your rift will display Red in one eye and green/blue in the other. This was a laugh out loud moment and one which is only possible in VR. Surprisingly after watching the movie for a short time I did start to see the 3D effect and it really makes appreciate how far we have come to reach todays levels of immersion and that all technology no matter how advanced it is, is always inspired by past ideas.

One very telling feature in this apartment is the collection of movie posters displayed on the wall. This shows a lot of the developers influences and inspirations for designing Technolust and includes such classics as Robocop, Blade Runner, Tron and interestingly Total Recall which brings us nicely to the final area of exploration currently available in this Beta Preview.

Once you figure out how to reach the red planet you will see the dim red dusty hills of Mars with some communication arrays’ nearby and some other smaller objects scattered around. This is a fantastic representation of the famous Red Planet and really captures the art style of the fore mentioned movie Total Recall. You can walk around freely but you are limited to a few minutes each time before you are teleported back to your apartment. This is likely due to the fact that this area is still a work in progress so limiting exploration by time will ensure that you don’t leave the limits of the game.

Overall Technolust is very impressive even at the very early stage and everybody who has backed Technolust can rest easy as IRIS V.R continue to impress with their development of this game and we think Technolust will surely go down in history as the first truly immersive adventure experience in Virtual Reality that will keep you jacked in for hours on end.
